UNIVERSITY MASTERMIND HONOURED AT SPECIAL CEREMONY - 29 JUNE 2006

The University of East Anglia have recognised the significant contribution of a former Chairman of Suffolk College by awarding Andrew Shelley an Honorary Doctorate of Civil Law. An event was held at Suffolk College on 18 May 2006 to mark the presentation to Andrew Shelley at which he was recognised for his support for the University Campus Suffolk (UCS) project.

As a Governor at Suffolk College since 1989, and Chairman of Suffolk College between 2001 and 2005, Mr Shelley has played a key role in the move to create a University in Suffolk.

Sir Geoffrey Allen, Past Chancellor of the University of East Anglia, recently said:

"His major contribution will be seen, in the fullness of time, to be his leadership in and his seminal contribution to the discussions with the University of East Anglia and with the University of Essex which led to the establishment of a University Campus in Suffolk.

"Such discussions are never easy, Andrew fought his corner with skill and enlightenment, encouraged his colleagues and maintained the respect of the representatives of the two Universities involved. He also showed a sure touch in matters relating to Ipswich Borough Council and Suffolk County Council."

Professor David Eastwood, Vice Chancellor of the University of East Anglia, said:

“The University is delighted to recognise the contribution Andrew has made to Suffolk College and to the development of higher education in the East of England. This award is richly deserved."

Reverend Peter Mortimer, Chair of Suffolk College Corporation described Andrew Shelley ‘as one of the most significant men in education for Suffolk over the past decade’.

Andrew Shelley said:

"My sincere thanks to UEA and Suffolk College. This award is a great honour for things I have enjoyed doing with the support of so many people and my family over the years. It will always be remembered and very much appreciated."

Ian Morris, President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales said:

"The dinner was a fitting tribute to somebody who has contributed in their local community over a long period of time with distinction and vigour always mellowed by humour."
