Sporting Success
Suffolk New College are celebrating a number of sporting successes across the College.
GOLF - Sam wins the regional tournament
Sam Renville, Kyle Proctor and Kane Mayes represented the college at the British colleges Sports Eastern Region golf tournament travelling to Costessey golf course in Norwich to compete against 7 other colleges from the region. With all golfers playing with a handicap of 5 and under this was going to be a very tough competition which had 23 students competing for the title and a place in the national finals. Sam Renville, who is a member of Fynn Valley Golf Club, won the tournament finishing at 1 under par to complete the course in 69, Kane Mayes was =3rd with 77 whilst Kyle Proctor finished on 84.
Sam will now play in the National Finals in March against colleges from England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales at Woodall Spa national Golf centre, Lincolnshire.
Women’s Football - Jade gets selected for the final trials
College Students Sophie Welton, Jade Henry and Jess Haighton, who all play for local women’s teams, were selected for the regional football trials at Easton College in October. The trial looked at players to play in the British Colleges National Squad and had a number of selectors watching the girls playing in a round robin tournament. The trials saw players from Chelsea, Arsenal and Spurs academies take part and it is great news that Jade Henry was selected in the final 32 to go to the final selection at Lilleshall national sports centre. Jade will be hoping to make it into the final 24 for the British squad who will be playing in international tournaments including a tournament in Hong Kong in the new year, Jade should find out if she makes the British squad in the New Year.
Badminton Cup Match
Suffolk New College competed against South East Essex college in the National Badminton Cup match on Wednesday 2 November. The team, Seb Rios-Hall, Lutfer Rahman, Amran Hossain, Jack Strowger, Laura Carr, Sophie Welton and Bonnie MacNab won 5-3 to seal a victory which will take them through to the next round against the Royal Latin School in Milton Keynes.
Hockey
Four students from Suffolk New College - Katt Allen, Jake Charles, Toby Rapsey and Sam Oakley were selected for the Eastern Region squad to compete in a South of England hockey tournament in Southampton. The tournament saw 10 teams, 5 male and 5 female, competing in a very close tournament which saw the East lose only 3 of their games. The games were watched by the National Hockey manager and a team of selectors to choose just 24 for the final trials. Jake Charles, who is a Goal Keeper for Ipswich Hockey Club was selected to go to the final selection at Cannock Hockey club. At these trials they will choose the final 18 to represent the country for the British Colleges National Squad.
Our congratulations to all the above students who have achieved so greatly in their sporting area. They have been a great ambassador for the College and their sport.
