Suffolk College at the Suffolk Show - East Anglian Daily Times Education Page, 1 June 2004

This week sees one of those clear markers that signals the start of summer as the Suffolk Showground opens its gates to the Suffolk Show on Wednesday and Thursday.

The Suffolk Show is an annual celebration of Suffolk life enjoyed by many thousands of visitors each year, and at which Suffolk College and the Suffolk Institute of Technology (SIT) will, naturally enough, have their usual strong presence.

Suffolk College staff will be on hand at the main college marquee (332) to provide information about the widest range of courses in the county. You can pick up a prospectus for part-time and full-time qualificatory courses, and reserve your copy of the new Community Learning brochure due to be published mid-July.

In the Suffolk Skills marquee (First Avenue 20-27) students from the Further Education Construction centre will be competing with other colleges in the areas of Brickwork and Carpentry & Joinery, thanks to sponsorship from Colliers, RMC and Jewsons. At the recent Joint Board Supper – the construction industry’s big occasion – Suffolk College students scooped 5 out of 6 Apprentice of the Year awards, so the standard will be very high. Furniture and cabinet making students will also be demonstrating their skills and competing to produce “The Best Furniture Piece” to be judged by Belvedere Antique Reproductions. There will be a demonstration of painting and decorating techniques, with paint supplied by Dulux, and for the first time in many years Suffolk College plumbing students, sponsored by Plumb Centre and Grahams Builders Merchants, will be there with an exercise in lead roofing.

If you want to make sure you are looking relaxed and at your best for the souvenir photos, in the same marquee you’ll find Suffolk College students offering hair styling, nail enamelling, mini make-up applications and on-site massage treatments

In marquee 174 there is fun of the ICT variety, as the SIT invite you to play around with technology and shows you how to ‘morph’ digital images. The SIT team will be there to talk about the SIT portfolio and the chance to enrol free on online courses.

The University for Suffolk Project marquee (174), which has been generously sponsored by the Suffolk Agricultural Association, is also the place to find out about the plans for a University Campus Suffolk and a new build for the Further Education College. That’s where on Wednesday evening a new website, www.ucsuffolk.co.uk, will be launched to provide the most up-to-the-minute information on this exciting project.

When you feel its time for a rest, head for the East Anglian Daily Times Hospitality Marquee (Stand 428) and let Suffolk College catering students serve you with delicious refreshments.

And if all this talk of Suffolk College reminds you of your days here – whether student or staff – come and say hello to Suffolk College Reunited at the SIT stand (174).
