Students Packed With Talent - 8 June 2004

Three students on the BA(Hons) Graphic Design Course at Suffolk College have won national awards for their packaging designs. In this year’s Student Starpack Awards, organised by the Institute of Packaging, the three second-year students were judged to be among the best in the country.

Emma Brazewell gained a Silver Award for her elegant 50s-style toiletries pack, and will receive a prize of specialist design software and entry to a European Design Championship.

Laura Spalding achieved the Bronze Award of the Institute of Packaging for her ingeniously devised design for a coffee gift pack.

Jodi Parker was Commended by the Institute for her brightly-coloured cosmetics packs which formed drawers for teenagers’ dressing tables.

Supported by Suffolk College lecturers Lindsay Harris and Graham Scott , the students had only five weeks, alongside their other studies to submit their designs. They had to analyse the competition brief, develop design concepts, and produce finished designs and prototypes.

Guided tours provided by Halesworth Print Finishers and Saxon Packaging Ltd (Lowestoft) gave the students an excellent insight into the subject before they began the competition.

Brian Holder, Associate Dean of Arts, said, “This shows the ability of Suffolk College design students – able to compete and succeed in a countrywide competition, just as they will succeed in their careers.”
