A boost for Arts and Media at Suffolk College - 29 June 2004

A recent government inspection has praised the undergraduate Arts & Media courses at Suffolk College. The Quality Assurance Agency report was released this week, to the delight of staff and managers at the College. The courses in Art, Design, Performing Arts and Media Studies were judged by the review team as ‘commendable’ – the highest possible rating – in several key aspects.

Brian Holder, Associate Dean for Arts, and Marc O’Day, Associate Dean for Humanities were both delighted with the report, saying, “This successful outcome will encourage staff in their efforts and affirm to our students that they are on courses among the best in the UK.”

The report drew particular attention to the collaboration with industry and the community, on the ‘challenging, coherent and progressive learning experience’, and on ‘enthusiastic and highly supportive staff teams’. In particular the reviewers commented that the ‘support and guidance for students are excellent’. The significant recent investment was recognised by the reviewers who agreed that ‘the much improved learning resources meet the needs of students.’

Susan Spencer, Dean of the Faculty of Management, Arts & Sciences, said, “We are very pleased that the hard work, dedication and achievement of our lecturers and staff have been recognised.”

Each subject review focuses on a particular range of courses, and involves months of work for staff, assembling samples of student work, assessment documentation, statistics and background information. The culmination of the process is a testing series of staff and student meetings with the team of visiting reviewers. This review of Arts and Media at Suffolk College follows similarly successful reviews in Computing and Social Work over the last year.

The report and results of the review are published on the web for all prospective students to see. Go to www.qaa.ac.uk .
