Suffolk College success at SkillBuild - 8 June 2006

Students from the Construction Curriculum Centre were in action at the recent SkillBuild regional finals at Great Yarmouth College held on 18 May 2006.

On a bright and blustery day at Great Yarmouth College, three brickwork students took part in the annual Regional Skillbuild competition and after 6 hours of hard work the students Joe Jones and Iain Langham, both of Cottrell Brickwork and Ceramics Ltd, achieved a superb result of 1st and 2nd place in the senior competition and will represent Eastern England in the National Skillbuild competition this autumn at Barnfield College, Luton. This was the second year in succession that Joe has won the senior competition and represents an outstanding achievement. Tutor Jerry Long said, "We are so proud of the continuing success for these two trainees."

The junior competitor, Kyle Rowland from S&E Brickwork, was not placed in his competition this year but enjoyed the experience and it was useful practice for next year!

Four students from the painting and decorating section entered the senior and junior competitions. In the senior final, Becky Jay from Reynolds and Rushton of Stowmarket and Adam Wright from CLC of Brandon were both completed their task and finished just outside the top three. Both students said how much they enjoyed representing the College.

In the junior, or ‘new entrant’ competitions, two full time students Sam Rossiter and Matt Freeman finished second and third respectively. This was an excellent effort as they were competing against employed apprentices.

Tutor Eddie Robinson said, "All the students should be congratulates on the high quality of work produced and their commitment to the tasks. All the students involved were brilliant ambassadors for Suffolk College."
