Students Union Freshers Fair 2010
Suffolk New College Students’ Union Fresher's’ Fair 2010
Students at Suffolk New College took over the Atrium, for one day only!
Suffolk New College had over 1000 new students start their course this week, they joined the 3000 returning students from last academic year to take part in this fantastic Freshers Fair on Tuesday 21 September. For the majority of these students, aged 16 to 19 years old, this was an opportunity to find out about the various opportunities and services available to them in the local area such as clubs, societies, heaelth advice, safety advice and places to go. As the only FE College to have a dedicated Students’ Union, where two sabbatical officers work full time sharing the students’ voice and working with senior management to provide a better learning and working environment for the young people, the College had the necessary expertise and youth view to make this event successful.
The event was organised by the current sabbatical officers Matthew Catchpole, President and Mercedes Woollard, Vice President of the Students’ Union. They invited many local organisations who displayed information and came along to raise awareness these included EACH, Suffolk Road Safety, New Wolsey Theatre, Connexions, The Red Cross, Healthy Ambitions and the Christian Union to name but a few. Access was free for all the students and all students picked up some great freebies including vouchers for Nandos, Shopping bags and chocolate! The Students also took on the challenge of a driving simulator; where they tested their reaction times to distractions that could happen in the road.
Matthew Catchpole, President of the Students’ Union said: “It was such a great event, we had a fantastic turn out of students attending and loads of students took away plenty of freebies. There was a brilliant number of organisations attending this year and having the Freshers Fair in the atrium for the first time really worked, the atmosphere was really buzzing.”
