Students’ Union Fresher's’ Fair 2011
Suffolk New College offered all new and returning students the opportunity to take part in its annual Fresher’s’ Fair to find out about the various services available in the local area such as clubs, societies, places to go and health services.
The event, which took place between 10am and 2pm, was organised by the current Suffolk New College Students’ Union sabbatical officers Mercedes Woollard, President and Jemel Fox, Vice-President (Suffolk New College, as the only college in Suffolk to have two sabbatical officers working full-time alongside senior staff, we help to share the students’ voice and provide a better learning environment for young people). Forty-eight local companies and organisations attended to display information and raise awareness of their services and products. These included Suffolk Football Association, The National Blood Service, Suffolk Youth Service and Army Careers as well as Topman, Rileys Snooker and Pool Club, Nandos and Ipswich Central. Access was free for all of our students and there were some great freebies on offer including Topman goodie-bags and vouchers. Other highlights included a martial arts demonstration and the chance to take part in a drink-driving simulator game, using a virtual steering wheel to show the dangers of driving whilst under the influence of alcohol.
Vice President Jemel Fox said, “The fair was a great success, with over 1,200 students attending. I would like to thank all participating organisations for their support. The experience has given students a better understanding of what help, guidance and support is on offer outside of the classroom”.
