Catering & Hospitality news stories

The Catering & Hospitality Centre at Suffolk New College provides further education and training for the Catering and Hospitality industry which (as a major local, national and international employer) requires staff for a variety of roles from reception, food service and food preparation to junior and senior hospitality management.

A wide range of courses is available at levels 1, 2 and 3, with most being available via either full or part-time routes. The courses are suitable for all students with an interest in catering, from school leavers to adults with industry experience, and there are currently more than 160 students enrolled within the Centre. There is also a range of short courses on offer which are tailored to support the specific needs of individuals in the hospitality industry.

The courses offered provide lively, exciting and realistic training through the operation of commercially viable restaurants and cafes on the college campus. In support there are well-equipped kitchens and theory base rooms with computing facilities. The courses are programmed to give students a broad experience of work in the catering industry by providing opportunities for them to work alongside professionals to deliver catering services at events like the Mayor's Charity Ball, the Suffolk Show, College end of year celebrations, other civic events and promotions for industry. Exchange projects with EC countries such as France and Belgium are also an integral part of our courses. To get a flavour for some of the Centre's activities see the news page.

For further information about the courses offered please visit our online prospectus pages.

To deliver its courses the Centre has a fully integrated team of staff made up from well qualified lecturers, instructors and technicians that are encouraged to maintain and develop their professional standing and to be fully familiar with the current trends in industry. The staff have pioneered the introduction of Key Skill concepts for NVQ courses developed with BTEC and CGLI.

The Centre has strong links with the catering industry locally through partnership with the Ipswich & District Hoteliers Association and Ipswich Town Football Club and nationally with the Restaurant Association of Great Britain (now part of the BHA) and the Hotel Catering & International Management Association through staff membership.

Students that wish to progress onto Higher Education can do so on completion of a suitable Advanced (Level 3) programme, moving to courses at universities and institutes of Higher Education. For information on the Foundation Degree (FdA) and Bachelor Degree (BA) courses in Event Management and Hospitality Management on offer at University Campus Suffolk (UCS) please visit the UCS course listings.

All our students benefit from being educated and trained in a vibrant environment by enthusiastic staff that are committed to fulfil the mission statement of the Centre and of the College.
